  • Title: Students in Klaipeda created solutions for social inclusion and sustainability
  • Dates: 4/27/2026

More than 60 young creators, 8 teams, and just 48 hours to turn ideas into solutions – the atmosphere was simply buzzing with innovative ideas at the "DIGI4all" hackathon held at the Klaipėda Science and Technology Park. Its participants created digital solutions to promote social inclusion and sustainability. This year, with Klaipėda declaring the Year of Social Responsibility, the theme of the hackathon gained even greater importance for the city and its community. The challenges were presented by two social service-providing institutions: Klaipėdos Lakštutė and Klaipėda City Care Home. The participants, in turn, proposed solutions related to creating a diary that would allow information to be provided at different levels to employees or relatives, and also sought solutions for challenges concerning safety and improving daily processes in social institutions. Other teams independently identified challenges in Klaipėda City, for which solutions would help improve Klaipėda's infrastructure as a sustainable city. The teams positively evaluated the event and its format – for most, it was useful to broaden their horizons and try to apply the knowledge gained during their studies to more sensitive topics, such as social inclusion. Participants also had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in using digital programs, public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, and applying artificial intelligence. Eight teams competed for the title of best idea, and the teams that won the prize places presented different, yet relevant and practically applicable solutions. The participants of the team "Fliuksai" developed a seaside guide app "Weathermind" based on existing data and a concept for smart information stands for beaches. The "SMART PARK" team proposed a smart, automated solution to help drivers avoid parking-related difficulties. The young specialists calling themselves "Žemaičiai" combined two challenges and presented "Zemguard" – a prototype of a nursing home security system designed to ensure residents' well-being and reduce administrative burden. No less interesting solutions were also developed by other teams – from a sexuality education app and AI-based information management systems to more sustainable mobility and security solutions for social institutions based on RFID and GPS technologies. Representatives of the institutions that posed the challenges were pleased that the topics they proposed received a lot of attention from young creators, and the solutions submitted by the teams revealed both the potential of the ideas and the participants' ability to create meaningful solutions. "Very interesting ideas were presented, some of which have the potential to be further developed," says Andrius Simaitis, Director of Klaipėda City Care Home, challenge provider, and team mentor. He is echoed by Said Rafijevas, a lecturer at Klaipėda State College: "The range of ideas was wide, and it was very interesting to see during the presentations how the teams developed them and how applicable they could be in practice." The organizers emphasize that such initiatives create value for all parties – for young people, it is an opportunity to practically test their abilities, and for the institutions and mentors who have faced challenges, it is a way to look at everyday challenges from a new angle. The hackathon once again showed that collaborative work between young talents, experts, and social partners can become the foundation for future solutions for the city of Klaipėda and its residents. This hackathon is part of „INVESTech“ – a project of Centers of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) funded by the „Erasmus+“ program – carried out together with partners in Lithuania: Klaipėda State College and the Klaipėda Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts. The organizing team thanks all participants, mentors, and sponsors who contributed to the implementation of the event and invites everyone to follow further initiatives and participate in future events.
